Many gamers’ childhood dreams came true after more than 20 years. Red Hot Chili Peppers fans looked at the Californication music video and wanted to play the hero of an old-school video game. It just became possible.
Music video from 1999
Red Hot Chili Peppers continue to tour, record new albums, and are doing well, but in the eyes of many modern players, it is a team that, with some songs, takes listeners back to childhood. Californication, Can’t Stop, or Under the Bridge take many players to a beautiful time when endless homework was the main concern of the day, and evenings could be spent playing video games.
The popularity of Californication – one of the most famous songs of Red Hot Chili Peppers – proves it perfectly. On the band’s official YouTube channel, the music video has over 900 million views and 100,000 comments. Some wrote them a year ago, others three years ago, and still others tonight.
The song is great, of course, but the music video also caught my eye. When the Red Hot Chili Peppers play and sing, an animation plays in the background, reminiscent of a PS1 video game, with the main character doing all kinds of crazy things. Miquel Camps Orteza decided to make the dreams of many players come true and create a playable video called Californication.
Californication as a free game
The Orthosis project quickly spread on the Internet. The 35-year-old Spaniard who is currently looking for a job in the video game industry has created his own project to show what he can do with Unity. He remembered his childhood fantasies and took the Californication music video into the workshop.
Orthotics chose the most interesting parts of the music video and made them into seven levels in his simple, but very nice game. The control instruction literally consists of four buttons. By controlling the T-shirt of the main character, we can move or jump. However, it boasts that Orteza introduced the possibility of playing on the pad, changing the camera, and even changing the snowboard on one of the levels.
Californication has its own website on itch.io, where you can download the game for free on Windows or macOS.
