The remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is still ill-fated. The title originally planned for 2021 has been postponed several times – and now the project is going back to the concept phase.
Until we actually hold a planned remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in our hands, it will probably take a little longer than expected. After the title once announced for 2021 was postponed several times, work at Ubisoft Montreal has meanwhile been completely restarted. This Ubisoft studio is now also taking over the development of Ubisoft Pune.
A new developer Q&A now states that Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has “currently returned to the concept phase”; it feels further away from the end of the development work than at any time since the announcement.
Because of this, the title won’t be featured at the Showcase Ubisoft Forward in June either – simply because there’s nothing to show either. Nevertheless, the creators assure via Twitter that there is no reason to worry: the project is still alive and will be pursued further. It is now simply in an “early phase” of development.
“As far as the production status is concerned, we are currently in the concept phase,” says producer Jean-Francoise Naud. “Since we took over the project, we’ve been looking for feedback from the community and finding our own way to deliver the game.”
It goes on to say that they are now building a team, prioritizing and assembling prototypes to test elements and explore how to engage the community for further feedback. No further details on the title are expected for the current year.
The Sands of Time Remake was originally announced in September 2020 and was due to be released in 2021 for PS4, PC and Xbox One. After an initial postponement, this was pushed back indefinitely.
