The gaming industry is going through a historic moment full of acquisitions that will shape the future of the sector for years to come. The spotlights are focused on the purchase of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, however the rest of the companies at an international level continue to invest and buy small or medium-sized software houses. Lately NetEaseChina’s second-largest gaming giant (just after Tencent) has expanded its ranks with the acquisition of Skybox Labs.
NetEase: a grand vision
The company itself shared through a statement the announcement of the purchase of the Skybox Labs studio for an amount that has not yet been disclosed. The studio will continue to operate as before, developing titles for PC and consoles and keeping its founders (Shyang Kong, Derek MacNeil y Steven Silvester) in the direction.
It was also specified that existing agreements with other companies will be respectedan essential factor for the studio since it owes its fame to its collaborations with Xbox Game Studios, Electronic Arts and other software houses. In fact, we recall that the studio is co-responsible for titles such as Minecraft (bedrock), Halo Infinite or Fallout 76.
According to Shyang Kong, thanks to the acquisition, the company will be able to accelerate plans and develop new ideas since NetEase will offer the necessary services to support such projects. We remind you that it is not the first purchase of NetEase as the company has already surprised us on more than one occasion with its acquisitions, in fact last summer it became the owner of Quantic Dream.
