Metal Gear Solid 4 is regarded as one of the best chapters of the saga. The fourth chapter marks the end of Snake’s adventures, and we see the return of several historical characters from the saga. Guns of the Patriots, this is the title, offered a 360 ° immersion for the players, taking them to war zones disputed between two factions. The game was acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, enjoying huge success on PlayStation 3. New information, however, reveals that the title could also have arrived on Xbox 360.
In the book “The Ultimate History of Video Games, Volume 2“Written by Steven L. Kent, we learn about several backstories of Metal Gear Solid 4. First of all, the game was not exclusive to PlayStation 3. Although it was not released on other consoles, no deal had been made at the time between Sony and Konami. In a way, then, the words of the then PlayStation boss, Jack Tretton, amounted to misleading advertising. Tretton, in fact, had said that MGS 4 was “only on PlayStation 3“.
The reason why the game didn’t make it to Xbox 360, however, relates to a very significant problem: the player. The console created by Microsoft, in fact, had a DVD player, as opposed to PS3 which had a Blu-ray player. If already with this last two discs were needed, with the first the situation would have been very different. It would have taken several DVDs to be able to make an Xbox 360 version.
A former developer of Kojima Productions, Ryan Payton, stated in the book that Konami staff was not in favor of a port of MGS 4 on Xbox 360 for hardware “inferior“. Payton said: “One fateful day, Konami’s R&D team chaired a meeting where we could see the fruits of their work. MGS 4 running brilliantly and smoothly on Xbox 360“.
So here are the real reasons why we weren’t able to see Metal Gear Solid 4 on Xbox 360. On YouTube, the PS3SUPPORT channel had published a video, now 14 years ago, where it was ironic precisely that it would take more DVDs to make a port. You can find it at the end of the article.
What do you think of it? We remind you that a Metal Gear Solid film is also in the works, although its release is still a long way off. In addition, the remake of the first chapter would also be in development.
