On most Mobile Phones, you can set different ringtones for both SMS and incoming calls.

for SMS

As the main purpose of this article is to suggest a way to set your own ringtone for incoming SMS, let’s first see the instructions on how to change message ringtone. First of all, you will need to copy the desired audio file to the “Notifications” folder located on the internal storage of the device. Then it’s up to you to do the smallest:

Open the mobile phone settings.

In the “Default notification sound” tab, select the previously copied file.

The Android operating system is characterized by its variability and therefore a new SMS ringtone can be assigned differently by directly accessing the Messages application:

Press the button in the form of three points.
Open the “Settings” section.

Go to “Ringtone” and then “Notification Ringtone”.

Select the option that interests you.

Lastly, you can even assign your own notification sound via the File Manager, by following a few simple instructions:

Start File Explorer.

Locate the desired audio file.
Highlight it.

Select the “Set as” option via the “three dots”.

Select the “Notification Ringtone” option.

Regardless of which method you decide to use, the sound of a text message notification will eventually change. Of course, depending on the device model and the version of the operating system, the names of some menu items may differ, but it is unlikely that you will find it difficult, since the interface of most mobile phones is intuitive.

By default, the sound that accompanies app notifications and incoming SMS is the same. That is, if a ringtone is set according to the instructions above, the sound will change for both messages and applications. However, Android allows you to assign a different ringtone to each app:

Open the settings of your mobile phone.

Go to “Applications”.
Select the desired program.

Open the “Notifications” tab and then the “Advanced” tab.
Under “Sound”, select your favorite ringtone.

Now the app you have selected will have its own sound when you receive a notification on your phone. This way you won’t mistake it for a text message and you won’t have to pick up your mobile phone unnecessarily.

It is important. Some versions of Android do not have this option, and the only way out is to create a separate sound profile in the phone settings.

for the calls

You can set a ringtone not only for notifications, but also for incoming calls. For many people, this is the preferred option to replace the ringtone. So, if you decide to put your own music on the ringtone, do the following:

Open the phone settings.

Go to “Sound and vibration”.

Open the melody tab.
Select the option “Select a ringtone on the device”.

Select the desired audio file.

On some devices, the user’s audio files are not listed. In this situation, proceed in the same way as with notifications, that is, put the file in a specific folder: “Audio”. Also, the similarity to audio replacements is evident in the increased choice of options, as the melody can be replaced via the file manager:

Open “File Explorer”.

Highlight a music file.

Press the three dots button.
Select “Set as” and then “Ringtone”.

Lastly, you can change the ringtone for incoming calls through the Contacts app. In this case, it is suggested to proceed as follows:

Launch “Contacts” or another application that is used as a ringtone.
Press the button in the form of three points.
Open the “Settings” section.

Go to “Sound and vibration” and then to “Tone”.

Select one of the files stored in the unit’s internal memory as the ringtone for the doorbell.

If everything has been done correctly, you will hear your ringtone the next time there is an incoming call. If nothing changes, or if you encounter difficulties when performing the operation, please refer to the last point of this manual, which deals with the most common problems.

For individual contacts

Speaking of ringtones for SMS and incoming calls, you can’t ignore the possibility of setting a ringtone for individual contacts. As you may have already guessed, this operation is carried out through the application of the same name:

Select the subscriber you are interested in.
Press the three dots button.
Select the “Set ringtone” option.

Specify the melody you want to use as ringtone.

As a side note. If you use a mobile phone with two SIM cards, you can assign a different ringtone to each SIM card.

On each phone, you can assign a ringtone to an incoming call from any contact. At the same time, the option to replace the default notification with an SMS notification may not be available. This is a feature of some models.

Posible problems

The locator replacement process doesn’t seem complicated, but some users occasionally run into various problems when trying to select their melody. Below we will see the most common situations:

The user melody does not appear in the list. You have to check that the audio file is saved in the internal storage and is in the “Notifications” folder for notifications and in the “Audio” folder for incoming calls. If it isn’t, move it.
There is no “Notifications” or “Audio” folder in the “Explorer”. Interestingly, this situation can be solved very easily, simply by creating the missing directory in the file manager. The operation can be done through the “File Explorer” or by connecting the mobile phone to a computer.

After a while, the standard tune plays again. This may be because you accidentally or intentionally deleted a file that was stored in the “Notifications” folder. Copy it back and change the settings again.
There is no option to assign a beep to a text message from a specific contact. This is not a problem, but a feature of the ringtone you are using. To get out of this situation, you can suggest using an alternative app to make calls by pre-installing it via Google Play Market.

The vast majority of problems are resolved using the methods described above. If you cannot find a solution, it is advisable to take a look at the mobile phone interface or (if the difficulty is not in finding the right menu option, but in selecting a melody) perform a factory reset.
