How to enlarge the keyboard and change the size of the letters on an Android.
The virtual keyboard plays an important role when using the mobile phone. Your comfort will determine your comfort level and your typing speed. Depending on the diagonal of the screen, the letters on the “keyboard” may appear too small. And then the owner of the device will have to figure out how to increase the keyboard in the Android operating system. Below we will see all the ways to enlarge the characters, as well as the options to replace the standard “keyboard”.
Integrated keyboard configuration
No need to install a third-party “keyboard” to make your keyboard bigger. You can get by with a pre-installed writing tool. By default, you may have a Gboard or SwiftKey keyboard installed. Depending on the “keyboard” you use, the way you expand the letters will be different.
gboard
Gboard is Google’s standard interface, which is installed by default on all mobile phones with the Android operating system. If the letters on it seem too small for you, follow a few simple steps:
- Tap on the text entry line to bring up a virtual ‘keyboard’.
- Tap on the gear-shaped button and then go to “Settings”.
- Open the “Keyboard Height” tab.
- Set to “Very High”.
Along with the height of the “keyboard”, the letters placed on it will also change. They will get bigger and you will feel more comfortable typing. Especially if the diagonal of your mobile phone is less than 5 inches. If you wish, you can set a less significant height to adapt the writing interface to the screen of your mobile phone. Even the maximum option may seem too big for you.
SwiftKey
This is a typing tool from the Microsoft development team. Like Gboard, it is installed by default on many mobile phones and also allows you to change the size of the characters while typing. However, that is not how it is done. As with the “keyboard” above:
- Click on the input line.
- Press the three-dot button located in the upper right corner of the virtual keyboard.
- Select the “Resize” option.
- Use the sliders that appear on the screen to adapt the input interface to the size of the screen.
Unlike Gboard, SwiftKey doesn’t have height adjustments. Instead, this interface element allows you to adjust the size of the “keyboard” to better fit the diagonal of your screen.
The important thing is to save the changes you have made by pressing the corresponding button when you have finished adjusting them.
go keyboard
Go Keyboard differs from the previous two interfaces in that this “keyboard” is not standard. It is installed through an application of the same name available on the Google Play Market, and due to its popularity it is widely used by owners of Android mobile phones. If you have Go Keyboard installed as a standard typing tool, you’ll need it to improve the interface:
- Hit the “Go” button and then hit the gear icon.
- Tap on the “three dots” that are marked as “More” on the Go keyboard.
- Go to “Display” and then to “Keyboard height, font size”.
- Select the “Keyboard Height” option.
- Adjust the height to your liking.
To change the size of the “keyboard” through Go Keyboard you use the sliders, which you should be familiar with from Microsoft SwiftKey. Once you have selected the format you want, all you have to do is press the “Save” button and the changes will take effect immediately.
Programs with large keyboards
Changing the size of the buttons through the “keyboard” settings is probably the best option to adapt the input interface to the size of the screen. However, it also has its drawbacks. In particular, no matter how big the keyboard is, not everyone can see the letters on it. Especially if the owner of the mobile phone is visually impaired.
In this situation, it is recommended to use a special “keyboard” with enlarged characters. These are some examples of this type of applications available in the Google Play Market:
- MessageEase;
- Chroma;
- 1C Large keyboard.
The difference between these programs and those mentioned above is not only in the size of the letters, but also in the design. This is not a QWERTY keyboard, so at first the user will have to get used to the new layout of the input elements.
However, in a couple of days you should get used to the new “keyboard” and start typing faster than ever. Before, however, you will have to select a third-party keyboard as the main one. Otherwise, the standard keyboard will appear on the screen, no matter how many alternative apps you have installed before.
How to change the default keyboard
Once you’ve installed an app with an alternative input tool, you’ll need to change the default “keyboard.” The operation is carried out according to the following instructions:
- Run the app you just downloaded and give it all permissions.
- Open the phone settings.
- Go to “Language and input”.
- In the “Default keyboard” tab, select the new input tool.
If done correctly, the next time you try to display a virtual “keyboard”, the new input tool will appear in front of you. If you wish, you can always change it to the default keyboard by following the same instructions.
